Cubase 16 Is Out: What’s New in Steinberg’s DAW?

Cubase 16 is out now with Instrument Stacks, six-part stem separation and several tools for writing and reshaping MIDI. Steinberg has also cleaned up settings, routing and plug-in handling, so the release covers everyday setup work as well as new creative features. It comes in Pro, Artist and Elements editions, but some of the headline additions are limited to the larger versions.

Instrument Stacks put several sounds on one track

Instrument Stacks combine VST instruments, Sampler Tracks and Drum Tracks beneath one playable track. Each layer can have its own key range, velocity range and transposition, which covers keyboard splits, octave layers and velocity-switched sounds without a separate MIDI routing setup. Stacks can also be saved as presets for use in another project. Steinberg includes the feature in Pro and Artist, but not Elements.
The Key Editor adds Strum for offsetting notes inside programmed chords and Stretch Selection for changing the length and timing of a MIDI passage. A new Lyrics lane keeps words attached to their notes when material is moved or copied. Omnivocal Basic adds two singing voicebanks, while the separate Omnivocal Pro provides ten.

Stem separation and AudioWarp gain new options

Cubase 16 can separate imported audio into vocals, drums, bass, piano, guitar and other instruments. Piano and guitar now have dedicated targets, and Steinberg says the current zplane technology improves the separation quality. Tempo Detection also has a new algorithm and a shorter workflow for both steady tracks and freely played recordings.
Cubase Pro 16 adds Spectral AudioWarp modes developed by the HALion team. These can pitch-shift or stretch vocals, instruments, drums and complete mixes, including more extreme processing for atmospheric sounds. Spectral AudioWarp is Pro-only, while the redesigned Tempo Detection workflow is available in Pro, Artist and Elements. The interface now calls the old Musical Mode setting Follow Tempo.

Settings and routing take fewer steps

Cubase 16 brings Preferences, Key Commands, Project Setup and Audio Connections into one searchable Settings workspace. It is non-modal, so you can leave it open while working in the project. Supported controls can receive key commands from their context menus, although Steinberg says the new Quick Help system does not yet cover every area.
Audio sends increase from eight to 16 per channel, while Control Room cue sends and MIDI sends rise from four to eight where those features are available. Inserts, Channel Strip modules and Modulators can now be copied or moved between channels by dragging them. Extended ASIO-Guard settings increase the maximum pre-processing buffer to 280 milliseconds for steadier playback in large projects, rather than low-latency input monitoring.
New effects and sounds cover drums, vocals and FM synthesis
Cubase 16 adds DrumChain, a drum multi-effect with 42 presets, to the Pro and Artist editions. VocalTouch supplies 30 presets across 15 vocal styles and is included with all three editions. The new Module library uses HALion's FM Lab engine and provides more than 200 presets for leads, keys, basses and textures. Five Wavetick packs add material for Afro House, Beats & Breaks, K-Pop, Latin Vibes and Organic Sessions.
Price and Availability
Steinberg released Cubase 16.0.0 on November 4, 2026, in Pro, Artist and Elements editions. Feature availability varies, and the complete release notes describe Pro. Customers who activated a matching Cubase 15 or earlier license on or after October 7, 2026, qualify for a free grace-period update.
We are leaving pricing out because a current Cubase 16 figure was not verified through our affiliate shop on release day. Steinberg's system-requirements page had also not yet provided a reliable Cubase 16 compatibility table, so check your computer before updating. Edition badges and further details are available on Steinberg's official Cubase 16 new-features page.
