You've built a preset. It sounds good, it plays well, and now you want it to do more than one thing without you tap-dancing across the footswitches mid-song. That's exactly what Line 6 Helix Stadium snapshots are for. A snapshot turns a single preset into several playable sounds that switch instantly and silently, and once it clicks, it changes how you build and perform every tone after this one. What is a snapshot on the Line 6 Helix Stadium?


A snapshot is a stored state of a preset. It remembers which blocks are on or off, and it remembers the values of selected parameters at one moment in time. Switch to a snapshot and Helix Stadium recalls all of that instantly.


Here's the part that matters most. A snapshot does not load a new preset. You stay inside the same preset the whole time. That's the whole advantage, because staying put means there's no audio gap when you change. Jump between two presets and you can get a brief silence during the handoff. Snapshots switch seamlessly, with the sound carrying right through.

The mental picture I keep coming back to is scenes. One stage, one rig, but eight different scenes you can call up on demand. Hold onto that idea, because it shapes everything below.


Snapshots vs footswitches: what's the difference?


At first glance, snapshots look a lot like the footswitch assignments in Stomp mode. Both change your sound while you play. But they solve genuinely different problems.

Footswitches in Stomp mode are for moment-to-moment moves. Kick on an overdrive, stomp a boost, add a delay throw for a single phrase. They're little decisions you make on the fly.


Snapshots are about context. Verse versus chorus. Rhythm versus lead. A clean intro versus a huge final chorus. Instead of asking "what do I want to turn on right now," you ask "what version of this preset do I want for this section." The cleanest way to keep it straight: presets handle whole songs, snapshots handle the sections inside a song, and stomp switches handle the small moves within a section. Once you think this way, your presets get a lot tidier.

What snapshots can and cannot change


Snapshots can flip the bypass state of any block, turning effects on or off. They can also change parameter values inside blocks, as long as those parameters are snapshot-enabled. One snapshot can run a delay mix at zero percent and another at twenty-five. One can sit at lower amp gain, another a touch higher. One can have a darker high cut on the cab, another more open.



What snapshots cannot do is change the physical layout of the preset. You can't add, move, remove, or swap blocks between snapshots. What stays fixed is which blocks are in the preset and where they sit. That limit is actually a feature. Because the block layout is locked, switching stays instant and predictable, and you always know the same blocks are present in every scene.

How to make a parameter snapshot-controlled


By default parameters stay the same across all snapshots. When you want one to change, you tell Stadium explicitly that it should be snapshot-controlled.


There are two quick ways. Press and turn one of the parameter knobs, or select the parameter and flip it to "Snapshot Ctrl" on the side tab. Block on and off states work differently: snapshots capture them automatically, so there's nothing to switch on there. If you ever want one block to ignore snapshots and stay fixed instead, open it and toggle "Snapshots Set Bypass" off. Once a parameter is snapshot-enabled, its value can differ in each of your eight snapshots, while everything you didn't enable stays shared across all of them.

A good habit is to be selective. Only snapshot-enable the things that actually need to move. Enable everything and you lose track of what's changing; enable a handful and you stay in full control of each scene.


A practical snapshot example: rhythm and lead


Let's apply this to a preset. Two snapshots, one preset.


Snapshot one is your rhythm sound: lower gain, delay off, amp level set to sit nicely in the band mix. Snapshot two is your lead: a little more gain, delay on, and a small amp-level bump so the guitar steps forward when it matters. Both snapshots use the exact same blocks. Nothing is added and nothing is removed. Only states and values change between them.

The biggest live advantage of snapshots is how they behave on stage. Switching is instantaneous and silent. No audio gaps, no tails getting chopped off. Delays and reverbs carry on naturally as long as you've enabled the trails on them, so a long reverb wash can ring out across a snapshot change instead of cutting dead.


That makes snapshots ideal for tight musical transitions. You can change your whole sound exactly on the downbeat without a single artifact.


And snapshots and stomps aren't rivals, they're partners. A strong setup uses snapshots for the big structural changes, verse to chorus, rhythm to lead, and leaves stomp mode for the optional extras like a one-off delay throw or a momentary pitch effect. That keeps a rig flexible without turning it into chaos.


Naming, order and common mistakes


Helix Stadium lets you name your snapshots and arrange them in a sensible order, and there's a handy Swap Snapshots function too: from Snapshot footswitch mode, touch and hold the two switches you want to swap and they trade places. Clear names matter more than they seem. Reading "Lead" mid-song takes no thought; reading "Snapshot 3" takes a second you don't have.

The most common mistake is overusing them. Not every small change needs its own snapshot. If you find yourself making snapshots for tiny tweaks, the preset is probably trying to do too much. Sometimes the most musical way to shift your sound is to roll back your guitar's volume knob or switch from the bridge to the neck pickup. Your hands and your guitar are part of the rig too.


Two more traps worth flagging. First, snapshot edits are still preset edits, so if you tweak a snapshot and don't save, the change is gone. Second, there's a "Discard edits" option for snapshots. With it on, snapshots forget any changed parameter values and bypass states when you switch away. That's the behavior you want for something like a wah you kick on during a lead: come back to that snapshot later and the wah is off again, not stuck where you left it.
