Arturia has officially introduced the MiniFreak 49, a new 49-key version of its six-voice hybrid synthesizer. The new model expands on the original MiniFreak with a full-size semi-weighted keyboard, an XYZ touch matrix, dedicated oscillator controls, audio-rate Filter FM, Voice Panning and increased sample memory.

While retaining the original dual-engine architecture and analog filters, the MiniFreak 49 introduces several improvements aimed at sound design, performance and hands-on control.
49 Full-Size Keys and Expanded Performance Controls
One of the most noticeable changes is the keyboard. The MiniFreak 49 replaces the original 37 slim keys with 49 full-size, semi-weighted keys featuring velocity sensitivity and mono aftertouch.
Arturia has also replaced the original touch strips with aluminum pitch bend and modulation wheels, providing a more traditional performance interface.

The front panel has been redesigned with dedicated Type, Wave, Timbre and Shape controls for both digital engines. A larger OLED display and additional shortcuts provide more immediate access to sound parameters.
New XYZ Touch Matrix
The MiniFreak 49 introduces a pressure-sensitive XYZ touch matrix that combines modulation, performance controls, preset browsing and visual feedback.
The matrix supports several functions:
Modulation Matrix: Create and edit modulation routings directly from the touch surface.
Freak Control: Control multiple sound parameters using X/Y movement and pressure-sensitive Z modulation.
Macros, Gate & Spice: Adjust sound parameters and introduce rhythmic variations during performances.
Preset Browsing: Navigate presets using a color-coded grid with 49 slots per page.
Visualizer: Display reactive animations representing envelopes, LFOs, sequences and other sound activity.

The matrix also supports custom LFO waveform editing and allows performers to hold modulation gestures while continuing to play.
New Sound Design Features: Filter FM and Voice Panning
The MiniFreak 49 retains the familiar six-voice hybrid architecture, combining two digital sound engines with individual analog filters and VCAs for each voice.
Both engines provide access to 31 oscillator modes, covering virtual analog, FM, wavetable, granular and other synthesis techniques.
Two important additions expand the instrument's sound design capabilities.
Audio-rate Filter FM allows either digital engine to modulate the cutoff frequency of the analog filter at audio rates. This introduces additional harmonic content and enables more aggressive, metallic and experimental timbres.
Voice Panning distributes the six individual voices across the stereo field using a single 270° control. Two distribution modes are available: Centered and Gradual.
The instrument supports four voice modes: Mono, Poly, Para and Unison. It also features 256 MB of memory for samples and wavetables, compared with 32 MB in the original MiniFreak.
Sequencing, Modulation and Effects
The MiniFreak 49 includes a 64-step sequencer with four modulation automation lanes, alongside a performance arpeggiator featuring octave variations, ratcheting, mutation and Spice & Dice controls.
Its modulation architecture includes two LFOs per voice with user-editable waveforms, an ADSR envelope and a cycling envelope with three operating modes: Env, Run and Loop. The cycling envelope can operate at audio rates, enabling additional modulation possibilities.
For sound processing, the synthesizer provides three digital effects slots that can operate in insert or send mode. Each slot offers access to 13 algorithms, including reverb, chorus, distortion, Super Unison and two vocoder options: Ext In Vocoder and Self Vocoder.
MiniFreak V and DAW Integration
The MiniFreak 49 comes with MiniFreak V, Arturia's software counterpart, allowing users to work with their synthesizer sounds inside a DAW.
The hardware offers MIDI In, Out and Thru, USB-C connectivity, clock synchronization, an external audio input, a sustain pedal input and balanced stereo outputs.
The new model is also compatible with presets created for the original MiniFreak, making it possible to transfer existing sound libraries to the expanded hardware.
Factory Presets and Freak Renaissance Sound Bank
The MiniFreak 49 includes 206 factory presets, covering a range of synthesis styles and sound categories.

Arturia also offers the free Freak Renaissance sound bank, containing an additional 250 presets. Together, these provide 456 sounds for users to explore.

Price and Availability
The Arturia MiniFreak 49 is available now, with an official US price of $799. The synthesizer measures 777 × 71 × 288 mm and weighs 5.7 kg.
With its expanded keyboard, redesigned interface and additional synthesis features, the MiniFreak 49 offers a more performance-oriented alternative to the original 37-key model while maintaining the core MiniFreak sound engine.
