What is the Akai MPC Sample
The Akai MPC Sample combines a sampler, sequencer, and effects unit in one portable device. It features 16 RGB velocity sensitive MPC pads, an onboard sequencer, and a 2.4 inch color display that keeps everything easy to follow. You also get three real time control knobs and a classic MPC style parameter slider, making sound shaping quick and tactile.
The Akai MPC Sample also draws inspiration from classic machines like the MPC60 and MPC3000, bringing that original hands on sampling approach into a modern, portable format. There’s something refreshing about that approach - less complexity, more feel, and a workflow that just invites you to play.
Workflow and features
Rather than trying to replace a full studio setup, the Akai MPC Sample focuses on speed and simplicity. The workflow is built around capturing sounds, chopping them up, and turning them into beats as quickly as possible.
Features like Instant Sample Chop, real time timestretch and repitch, and internal resampling make it easy to experiment and reshape sounds on the fly. You also get access to four onboard FX engines designed for real time sample flipping and resampling, with 60 creative effect types including Flex Beat, Color Compressor, vinyl style effects, and tape style processing.
Everything is designed to be hands on. Three real time control knobs let you shape effects and sounds instantly, without diving into menus. Under the hood, the unit runs on 2 GB of RAM with 8 GB of internal storage, giving you enough space and performance for mobile beatmaking.
A dedicated record gain knob and level indicator help keep recordings clean and under control.

Connectivity and storage
Even with its compact size, the Akai MPC Sample covers all the essentials. It includes stereo line inputs and outputs on 1/4 inch jacks, a headphone output, MIDI in and out via 3.5 mm ports (adapter required), sync out, and USB C for power, audio, MIDI, and file transfer.
Samples and projects can be stored on a microSD card, and moving files between the device and a Mac or PC is straightforward via USB C.

Akai MPC Sample portability
Weighing under one kilo and small enough to fit in a backpack, the Akai MPC Sample is clearly designed for mobile use, whether you are working on the couch, traveling, or just stepping away from your main setup.

A very short history of the Akai MPC

Back in 1988, Akai released the first MPC, designed by Roger Linn. He wasn’t exactly a fan of reading instruction manuals, so he set out to build something you could just pick up and play. And now… you still end up reading manuals and watching YouTube tutorials anyway - just kidding!
Early models like the MPC60 had very limited sampling time, which pushed producers to chop sounds into small pieces - a limitation that helped shape the sound of hip hop.
The iconic 16 pad layout quickly became a standard, and in many ways, devices like the MPC Sample are bringing that same idea back - simple, hands on, and built around creativity.
